Modern Family

I fall a little more in love with The Middle every week. I feel like I say the same thing over and over, but I have not seen a show in recent memory that does such a great job of portraying modern family life. The family loves each other but is always fighting; the parents are always about one mini-emergency away from a full scale breakdown, and the kids are all so wrapped up in their lives they seem not to notice. It’s a sitcom, so obviously everything wraps up nicely at the end of each episode, but it’s the stuff in the middle that’s pure comedy gold. The mother and father both work in jobs they don’t necessarily like and race around to make school plays and football games. They can’t keep the house clean, and they struggle to pay their bills. It’s like a snapshot of family life in America for the vast majority of us. They all make it through of course each week; it would be kind of a terrible show otherwise, and I love watching them make their way through it.
